This is to increase the number of learners progressing to higher levels of sector-related learning (for example Level 4+), and into related employment.
The SECTEC will work to support progression through immersive promotion and clearer, flexible pathways developed with industry and aligned to sector specialisms and workforce needs.
Early research shows that in construction a significant proportion of young people leave the further education skills system qualified to level 2 (equivalent to GCSE level).
The reasons for this are multifaceted and include the extent of provision available that enables that progression to advanced courses or apprenticeships. The SECTEC will work across the partnership to understand why this is and how in-demand progression pathways can be created in the skills system.
The reasons for this are multifaceted but we do know there is very little provision available within the further education sector that enables that progression and as part of its work, the SECTEC will work across the south east partnership to understand why this is and how in-demand progression pathways can be created in the skills system.
Initially, the SECTEC is seeking to capture and promote the type of career journeys young people could expect to take within the construction sector. The Careers ‘Tube Map’ is being developed to provide an interactive digital platform through which people can look at the real-life career journeys that people in the sector have taken and what qualifications and training they have done to underpin it.
This will help not only to inform people about careers in the industry but also to understand the more common routes taken to progress within the sector.
The SECTEC is also undertaking some small scale ‘test and learn’ activities that have been co-designed with construction employers to create immersive experiences for young school age people and school teachers, aimed at sustained engagement, leading to positive outcomes.
What next…
The ‘Tube Map’ is currently in technical development and will be made available (limited) for testing shortly. Test and learn activities will be evaluated and shared amongst the partnership.
